A summary of actions and information from the meetings of Pittsburgh Presbytery

February 13, 2014 meeting of Pittsburgh Presbytery:

Conducted a conversation on the cost of racism as organized by the Black Presbyterian Caucus and the Amos 5:24 Ministry Team, with Rev. Veronica Goines and Rev. Paul Roberts serving as panelists

Installed new Moderator and Vice Moderators for 2014:

The Executive Committee Retreat is scheduled for 4:00 PM Sunday, March 2, through 4:00 PM Monday, March 3, at Crestfield Camp & Conference Center

The 17 awards from the Great Ends of the Church Fund for 2014 may be found on the presbytery website

The presbytery obligation for payment of all per capita to the Synod of the Trinity and the Office of the General Assembly for the past year has been paid in full

Approved the following waiver of term limits and adjustments to congregations:

Approved the following requests from the Malawi Partnership Ministry Team:

Confirmed the presbytery minutes reading team for 2014 to consist of the following: Teaching Elders Jeff Tindall, Eric Dennis, Carolyn Cranston, & Sheldon Sorge, and Ruling Elders Lenore Williams & Cathy Nelson

Authorized the celebration of the Lord’s Supper in 2014 at meetings and events of all Pittsburgh Presbytery ministry teams, committees, commissions, task forces, camps, and conference centers

Confirmed permission given by the Office of the General Assembly to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary to celebrate the Lord’s Supper in 2014, including permission for duly ordained ministers of other denominations to preside, so long as the celebration does not contradict the Reformed understanding of the Lord’s Supper

Approved the following to serve in 2014 as sub-committee chairs/co-chairs of Executive Committee: Eric Dennis, Ecclesiastical; Chris Martin, Finance; Nancy Clifton, Property; William Crawford and David Thornton, Personnel

Elected Ruling Elder Chris Martin (East Liberty Presbyterian Church) as Treasurer of Pittsburgh Presbytery for 2014

Approved the following change to Article 10, paragraph 4 of the presbytery manual to read:

“The Commission on Preparation for Ministry (CPM) is hereby granted authority to act on behalf of the presbytery to perform the following functions without further action necessary on the part of the presbytery:

  1. Enroll Inquirers;
  2. Move Inquirers to Candidacy;
  3. Certify Candidates ready to receive a call;
  4. Approval of Annual Consultations;
  5. Transfer and receive Inquirers/Candidates to and from other presbyteries;
provided CPM make a full report of its actions to the presbytery at the next stated meeting.”

Approved the following list for placement as Interim/Temporary Pastors in the designated churches for one year unless otherwise noted:

Elected Alan Olson, a student nominated by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Candidate of Pittsburgh Presbytery, to be the seminary’s Alternate Theological Student Advisory Delegate to the 221st General Assembly, June 14-21 in Detroit, Michigan
