MISSION

“Offering compassionate, faith-based recovery services to mothers and their children.”  We believe women can break the chains of addiction and hopelessness, that they can save their own lives, when surrounded by what means most to them: their children.

CURRENT PROGRAMS

Sojourner House:  As a “women with children” facility, we offer an intensive program that recognizes the unique pressures of maternal addition.  Residents stay six months while they learn to reclaim their lives.  A unique feature is that families live in their own apartments with services available on site. Our three-pronged approach strengthens women through Drug & Alcohol counseling, parent education and life skills training.  Voluntary bible study and church/congregation attendance is encouraged; a class in spirituality is mandated.  Counseling includes individual and group counseling and attendance at Narcotics and Alcoholics Anonymous.  Parenting services include opportunities to learn about childhood development, play and successful parenting skills.  We have numerous community partnerships, including Alliance for Infants and Toddlers, Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Homeless Children’s Education Fund, Aids Task Force, Center for Victims of Violent Crime, and more.

Sojourner MOMS:  Motivation, Opportunities, Mentoring and Spirituality.  Sojourner MOMS provides “the next step” for recovering women and their children.  The MOMS approach begins by giving families permanent supportive housing.  For most, it may be the first home they’ve ever known.  While women and their dependent children live in MOMS apartments, they receive services vital to continuing their recovery, reuniting with their family, and moving toward self-sufficiency.

HISTORY

Founded in the early 90’s, Sojourner House was named after the great African American preacher, Sojourner Truth, who spoke up for all women after having successfully fought for her own and her child’s deliverance from slavery.  An impressive speaker and a woman of strong faith, we believe that Sojourner Truth’s victories inspire our mission – to help women overcome the slavery of addict ion and to become free.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF

Sojourner House, a licensed Drug & Alcohol residential program, hires staff in accordance with Pennsylvania licensing guidelines.  Their professional backgrounds include addictions counseling, psychology, and childhood development.   The Executive Director, Clinical Supervisor, and Medical Director insure that all standards are met and the families are receiving the highest quality of services.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONGREGATIONAL OR INDIVIDUAL INVOLVEMENT

We are always in need of volunteers.  We welcome those who can help on a regular basis or through special projects.  We need help with the children on a daily basis as well as help with fund raising activities.   Please contact the Executive Director at 412 – 441- 7783, ext. 11.
